He is known also by many as the “Apprentice of Rock-n-Roll” a nickname earned while performing with and being taught by none other than the “Architect of Rock-n-Roll” Little Richard. In 1987 Big Jaye’ was dis- covered by the rock-n-roll icon in Hollywood, Ca. after pleading for an autograph and then giving an impromptu song & dance audition. Seeing that it factor that can not be taught the legend that he from that day to this so lovingly calls “King” hired him on as a featured dancer/background singer. From what was supposed to be a one concert engagement at Little Richard’s coming home concert in Macon Ga. They went on to tour the world together for over 15 years while also developing a father/ son relationship that continues to this day. The experience was a life changing ca- reer making endeavor. Big Jaye’ was filmed performing with his mentor for the archives at the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame and he was awarded a Pre-Grammy Certifi- cate for his special contribution to the Music Industry cementing his place in rock history with what can be only described as a storybook beginning. Just Google the three words Little Richard Dancer and its Big Jaye’ Nelson’s image that appears connected for all times to one of the most important artist the world has ever known. When asked about these formative years Big Jaye’ replies “I went to the Harvard or Yale of Rock-n-Roll just like Jimi Hendrix, Billy Preston and The Beatles and I too got my degree”. This journey would take him on countless world tours, televised appearances, award shows and even President Bill Clinton’s Inaugural Ball. Getting career advice from the likes of James Brown, Chuck Berry, BB King, Chubby Checker, Bo Diddley and Jerry Lee Lewis to name a few was a staple in being a member of such a Legendary band. In 1997 He co-created the funk-rock band Jaye’ Swift & Co. Inc. This was the start of scheduling conflicts as he had to choose either to attend the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies with Little Richard or open with his own band for Van Halen, he chose the later.
