Description

On October 31, 1967, the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation was incorporated "to preserve natural resources and wildlife habitat on and around the islands of Sanibel and Captiva.” Fifty years later, SCCF is still guided by that original mission. Since incorporating, SCCF has acquired and preserved environmentally sensitive land on and around the islands. This land includes critical wildlife habitats, rare and unique subtropical plant communities, tidal wetlands, and freshwater wetlands along the Sanibel River. Without protection, many of these areas would have been lost to residential and commercial development, either directly or by fragmentation of habitat. Over the years, with support of the community and visitors, we have: Acquired over 1,800 acres of wildlife habitat; Removed invasive, non-native plants and restored native vegetation; Encouraged people to landscape for wildlife through our Native Landscapes & Garden Center; Introduced over 65,000 people a year to barrier island ecology; Involved volunteers with sea turtle, nesting shorebird, plant propagation and other nature programs; and Undertaken research on land and in our surrounding waters.
